How to assess a job posting

Learn how to verify employers, detect suspicious job postings and protect personal information.

Practical steps

  1. Find the role on the employer's own careers site. Compare title, location, job description and requisition number. Reposted listings can be outdated.
  2. Check the application destination carefully. Familiar applicant tracking systems can be legitimate, but a similar-looking domain is not proof of affiliation.
  3. Look for clear responsibilities, employment type, location restrictions and hiring process. Missing salary information alone is not proof of fraud.
  4. Treat application fees, gift cards, bank login requests or recruiter-directed equipment purchases as serious warning signs.
  5. If approached unexpectedly, verify the recruiter using contact information independently obtained from the employer's official website.
